Austrian and German Embassies Collaborate to Celebrate Opera Culture in India
New Delhi, March 9 – In a remarkable celebration of opera music and cultural exchange, the Austrian and German Embassies jointly organized a spectacular opera event in the national capital. Featuring a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “The Magic Flute”, the event showcased the growing enthusiasm for Western classical music in India.
Maestro Guido Johannes Rumstadt, a distinguished Symphonic, Operatic, and Choral Conductor from Germany, lauded the energy and passion of the Indian performers.
“It is about the personal fire of the actors. They are young, they have good voices, and given that this was their first opera, it was really amazing what they did,” said Rumstadt.
He emphasized that the 230-year-old composition remains timeless, capable of being “brought back to life” through passionate performances. He also expressed optimism about the future of opera culture in India, highlighting the joy of cultural collaboration between nations.
Austrian Ambassador to India, Katharina Wieser, was equally enthralled, calling it a “fantastic experience” to witness Indian singers and musicians embracing the opera tradition.
“One does not often see Western classical music, particularly opera, performed in India. To have it brought to life by Indian artists is truly special,” she said.
She further described music as a unifying force, a universal language that transcends borders, strengthening India-Europe cultural ties.
With such overwhelming enthusiasm and talent, the event underscored India’s growing appreciation for opera, paving the way for future cultural exchanges in the realm of Western classical music.
