OpenAI Offers ChatGPT Go FREE for One Year in India: A Major Push for ‘Indiafirst’ AI

In a significant move to deepen its roots in India, Sam Altman-led OpenAI has announced that its recently launched ChatGPT Go subscription tier will be available free of cost for one full year to users in the country. This promotional offer is set to begin on November 4th and will be available for a limited sign-up period.

The decision comes as OpenAI prepares to host its first-ever DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru on November 4th, underscoring India’s growing importance to the company.

What is ChatGPT Go?

ChatGPT Go is OpenAI’s new subscription service designed to provide more affordable and enhanced access to its advanced AI capabilities. The service, which was launched in India back in August, features key upgrades over the standard free tier:

  • Higher Query Limits: Users can submit more messages and queries.
  • Expanded Image Generation: Access to enhanced image creation features.
  • File Upload Capabilities: The ability to upload files for analysis and interaction.

A Commitment to India’s AI Landscape

India is already recognized as ChatGPT’s second-largest and one of its fastest-growing user bases globally, demonstrating a rapid embrace of the technology by developers, students, and professionals alike.

The company noted the strong initial success of the Go tier, stating that the number of paid ChatGPT subscribers in India more than doubled within the first month of its launch. Following this demand, OpenAI has since expanded ChatGPT Go to nearly 90 markets worldwide.

In an official statement, OpenAI highlighted that this promotion is a continuation of its “Indiafirst” commitment and aims to support the IndiaAI Mission. This initiative reinforces the momentum around AI development in the country, especially as India prepares to host the AI Impact Summit next year.

Existing ChatGPT Go subscribers in India will also be made eligible for this free 12-month promotion.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT, commented on the announcement: “Since initially launching ChatGPT Go in India a few months ago, the adoption and creativity we’ve seen from our users has been inspiring. Ahead of our first DevDay Exchange event in India, we’re making ChatGPT Go freely available for a year to help more people across India easily access and benefit from advanced AI.”

The complimentary year-long access is expected to significantly accelerate the adoption of advanced AI tools across the Indian ecosystem, from educational institutions to professional industries.
