Washington [US], April 13: Actress Olivia Munn has opened up about a turning point in her life and career, revealing that she was ready to walk away from acting before being cast in Apple TV+’s dark dramedy Your Friends and Neighbors.
In a recent interview cited by Deadline, Munn reflected on a deeply challenging period marked by the COVID-19 pandemic, the birth of her child, and postpartum anxiety. Struggling to find joy in acting, she began seriously considering a move behind the scenes into writing, producing, or directing.
“I called my agents and my manager and said, ‘I’m done being in front of the camera, don’t put me up for anything,’” Munn recalled.
However, her perspective shifted when she was offered the role of Samantha, a single mother navigating the complex world of wealth, power, and relationships, in the satirical series created by Jonathan Tropper.
Starring Jon Hamm as Andrew “Coop” Cooper, a disgraced hedge fund manager rebuilding his life after scandal and divorce, Your Friends and Neighbors dives into the hidden chaos of the ultra-wealthy. Munn’s character, Samantha, becomes romantically involved with Coop while also trying to hold her own in a ruthless social circle.
“There’s a carelessness with which they live their life. They feel impervious to the world and it’s so fascinating to watch these people crumble,” Munn explained.
“Samantha is a survivor—she’s going to do anything to maintain her place and take care of her children.”
Munn’s return to acting also came after a private health battle with breast cancer, during which she underwent surgeries and treatment. Now in remission, she is confirmed to reprise her role in the show’s second season.
Interestingly, Samantha’s character was originally written as a one-season role. But, according to creator Jonathan Tropper, Munn’s powerful performance changed the plan.
“After working with her for a little while, I think we had consensus across the board—we wanted her to stay,” Tropper shared.
With Your Friends and Neighbors renewed for a second season, Munn’s comeback is not just a professional triumph but also a personal one, marking a resilient new chapter in her life.
