Tel Aviv [Israel], May 29: Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar has appointed Ofra Farhi as Ambassador to Zambia, and Non-Resident Ambassador to Botswana and Zimbabwe. The Israeli Embassy in Zambia is scheduled to open in August, marking a significant step in deepening bilateral ties with the African nation.
Farhi currently serves as Ambassador-at-Large to the three countries and will now formally assume ambassadorial duties, pending government approval of her appointment.
Israel and Zambia first established diplomatic relations soon after Zambia gained independence in 1964. However, ties were severed following the 1967 Six-Day War, a move echoed by many African nations at the time. Diplomatic relations were reestablished in 1991, and Zambia opened an embassy in Tel Aviv in 2005.
Farhi’s appointment reflects Israel’s growing diplomatic engagement in Africa, particularly with nations that share common interests in development, security, and innovation.
