Novak Djokovic Reaches Record 14th Wimbledon Semifinal, Eyes 8th Title After Beating Cobolli

Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic is just two wins away from a record-extending 25th Grand Slam title and a record-levelling eighth Wimbledon crown, after defeating Italy’s Flavio Cobolli in four sets on Wednesday to reach a record 14th Wimbledon semifinal.

Djokovic, who has not lifted the Wimbledon trophy since 2022, had a shaky start, dropping the first set—just as he did in his fourth-round match against Alex de Minaur. But once again, the champion found his rhythm and staged a gritty comeback to seal a 6-7(6), 6-2, 7-5, 6-4 win in a battle that lasted three hours and 11 minutes.

The match wasn’t without drama, as Djokovic suffered a minor slip on the baseline, sparking concern. However, after stretching his leg, the 37-year-old returned to action and looked composed as he navigated through Cobolli’s aggressive play.

Cobolli, competing in his first-ever Wimbledon quarterfinal, impressed with his athleticism and shot-making, particularly in the opening set. But experience prevailed, with Djokovic recording his 102nd Wimbledon victory and improving his season record to 26-8.

If Djokovic wins two more matches, he will equal Roger Federer’s record of eight Wimbledon titles and become the first man to win 25 Grand Slam singles titles. His last Slam triumph came at the US Open 2023.

Next up for the Serbian superstar is a blockbuster semifinal against world number one Jannik Sinner, who beat Ben Shelton in straight sets, 7-6(2), 6-4, 6-4.

Sinner holds a narrow 5-4 lead in the head-to-head against Djokovic and defeated him in the French Open semifinal just last month. However, Djokovic has beaten Sinner in their last two Wimbledon encounters, in 2022 and 2023.

All eyes will now be on Centre Court as Djokovic battles Sinner for a spot in the final and a shot at further tennis history.
