Noida Techie Death: Yogi Adityanath Sacks Top Officials, SIT To Probe ‘Death Trap’ Accident

NOIDA, UTTAR PRADESH — In a major administrative crackdown on Monday, January 19, 2026, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath ordered a high-level probe into the tragic death of Yuvraj Mehta, a software engineer who drowned after his SUV plunged into a water-filled excavation pit in Sector 150.

The move follows widespread public outrage and allegations of “criminal negligence” by the Noida Authority and private builders. The state government has placed Noida Authority CEO M. Lokesh on the waitlist, effectively removing him from his post. Additionally, Junior Engineer Naveen Kumar has been terminated from service, and show-cause notices have been issued to multiple senior officers in the traffic cell.

1. The SIT Investigation: 5 Days to Report

A three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been constituted to examine the “chain of lapses” that led to the tragedy.

  • The Panel: Led by the ADG (Zone) Meerut, the team includes the Divisional Commissioner of Meerut and the Chief Engineer of the PWD.
  • The Mandate: The SIT will investigate why the excavation site lacked basic safety features like barricades, reflectors, or warning signs. They are expected to submit their findings directly to the CM by January 24.

2. The Final 90 Minutes: “Papa, Please Save Me”

The details of Yuvraj’s final moments, as recounted by his father Rajkumar Mehta (a retired SBI Director), have sparked national grief.

  • The SOS: After his Grand Vitara veered off the fog-choked road at 12:15 AM on Saturday, Yuvraj managed to climb onto the roof of the sinking car. He shared his live location with his father and dialled 112.
  • The Struggle: For nearly 90 minutes, Yuvraj flashed his mobile torch through the near-zero visibility fog, screaming for help.
  • The Rescue Failure: While police and fire teams arrived, witnesses allege they were ill-equipped, lacking divers and boats. An online delivery worker, Moninder, was the only one to jump into the freezing water in a desperate attempt to reach Yuvraj, but the murky depth and cold proved insurmountable.

3. FIR Filed Against Real Estate Developers

The police have registered an FIR at the Knowledge Park Police Station against two prominent builders:

  1. MJ Wishtown Planner Limited
  2. Lotus Green Construction Private Limited

The firms are accused of leaving a 30-foot-deep basement excavation unsecured and waterlogged, directly adjacent to a public road. Residents of Sector 150 claim they had repeatedly petitioned the Noida Authority to install reflectors and barricades at the site, which had become a “death trap” during winter fog.
