Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India]: Acclaimed actress Nimrat Kaur, known for her poignant performances in The Lunchbox, Airlift, and most recently Kull, opened up about her artistic journey during an inspiring interaction with students at Actor Prepares, Anupam Kher’s acting school in Mumbai.
Speaking candidly, Nimrat revisited her beginnings in Mumbai back in 2004—arriving with dreams and resilience but little direction. “I thought I’d earn from modelling and ease into films,” she shared, admitting it didn’t take long to realise acting demanded far more than facing a camera.
Her true calling emerged through theatre, which she described as her “real training ground.” From winning Best Actress at Thespo to touring iconic venues like Prithvi Theatre and NCPA, Nimrat credits every inch of her craft to those early stage experiences. “Whatever I’ve learned, I owe it to theatre,” she said.
One of the most defining moments of her career was landing the lead role in The Lunchbox (2013), opposite the late Irrfan Khan. Without even auditioning, she was cast by director Ritesh Batra, thanks to casting director Seher Latif recognizing her potential. “It was a blessing, a gift from God,” Nimrat reflected.
Currently, Nimrat stars in the period drama Kull, streaming on Jio Hotstar. Her portrayal of Rani Indrani Rai Singh, a royal woman grappling with deep personal turmoil, has received critical praise. “She may look like a princess, but she’s fighting inner battles, especially with her brother,” Nimrat explained. A haunting Rajasthani lullaby sung by her character became a standout emotional moment in the series.
But perhaps the most heartfelt praise came from her mother. “She was stunned. She said she couldn’t believe what she saw. That meant everything to me,” Nimrat shared with emotion.
During her visit to Actor Prepares, Nimrat praised the students for their dedication and creativity, recalling her own uncertain start in the city. “It’s heartwarming to see their passion. It reminds me of myself back then,” she said.
Outside of acting, Nimrat finds solace in nature. For her birthday, she trekked through Binsar Wildlife Sanctuary in Uttarakhand and visited Jageshwar Dham with family. “The mountains give me peace,” she said. Raised in an Army household, she credited her late father—a martyr—and her mother’s strength for shaping her identity.
On the professional front, Nimrat was last seen in Kull and Sky Force, alongside Akshay Kumar, Veer Pahariya, and Sara Ali Khan. As she continues to embrace layered roles and explore new creative spaces, Nimrat Kaur remains a powerful voice in Indian cinema—grounded in her roots, yet reaching for ever-greater heights.
