Kolkata: The niece of Sanjay Roy, the man who was found guilty in the RG Kar Medical College rape and murder case on Sunday, was found dead in a wardrobe at her home in Alipore, South 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. This was a startling turn of events.
Sources said that the body of the sixth-grade girl was found in the cupboard, which caused panic in the area.
She was quickly taken to the Seth Sukhlal Karnani Memorial (SSKM) Hospital, where physicians said she was dead when she got there.
Family Tragedy and a Rough Past
Reports say that the child’s mother killed herself a few years ago. After she died, her father married her sister-in-law, who subsequently became the girl’s stepmother.
The stepmother had gone out to buy Diwali crackers on the day of the event, leaving the girl alone at home. When she got back, she said she called out many times but no one answered.
She couldn’t find the child after breaking into the residence. Media got word from sources at the Kolkata Police headquarters in Lalbazar that she found the girl’s dead body only after opening the wardrobe.
Neighbors Remember Fights Happening Often
Neighbors informed the police that there were often loud fights and other problems at the family’s house.
A neighbor remarked, “We often heard shouting and fighting from that house.” They also said that the child seemed to be more reclusive in recent months.
As soon as the girl’s body was recovered, the police were called. Forensic teams came soon after to gather evidence.
Police Investigation: Murder or Suicide?
Kolkata Police think it might be suicide, but detectives haven’t ruled out the potential of murder.
There has been a report of an unnatural death, and the post-mortem report is awaited to find out what exactly caused the death.
The police noted that the family has not yet made an official complaint.
An officer said, “The investigation is still going on, and all possibilities, including foul play, are being looked into.”
The RG Kar Case Link
Sanjay Roy, the victim’s uncle, was found guilty in the RG Kar rape and murder case, which is one of the most horrific murders in West Bengal in recent years.
The rape and murder of a 31-year-old trainee doctor at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in August 2024 caused outrage across the country and led to rallies all over the state.
The Kolkata Police were in charge of the inquiry at first, but the Calcutta High Court wasn’t happy with the local investigation, thus it was given to the Central Bureau of inquiry (CBI) on August 13, 2024.
The Supreme Court then took notice of the matter on its own on August 19, 2024, and kept an eye on the proceedings.
The CBI charged Roy with a crime in October of last year. On January 20, 2025, a Kolkata trial court sentenced him to life in prison till he dies.
The investigation goes on
The police have closed off the Alipore house and are talking to family and neighbors. Forensic experts are looking for signs of a fight or injuries from outside at the location.
Officials have said they will wait for the results of the autopsy before deciding if it was a murder or a suicide.
