Academy Award-winning actor Nicole Kidman, who recently earned her 20th Golden Globe nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture (Drama) for her role in Babygirl, revealed she once contemplated retiring from acting after the birth of her daughter Sunday Rose Kidman Urban in 2008.
In an interview reported by E! Online, Kidman shared her initial thoughts on leaving Hollywood: “When I gave birth to Sunday, I was like, ‘I think I’m pretty much done now.'”
At the time, Kidman had settled into a quieter life with husband Keith Urban on a farm in Nashville. However, her late mother, Janelle Kidman, who passed away in September at age 84, gave her pivotal advice that changed her course: “My mum said, ‘I wouldn’t give up completely. Keep a finger in it.'”
Recalling her mother’s wisdom, Nicole added: “She’s going, ‘Just listen to me. Keep moving forward. Not saying you have to do it to the level you’ve been doing it, but I wouldn’t give it up completely.'”
Kidman, who shares Faith Margaret Kidman Urban (13) with Keith, and Bella Kidman Cruise (31) and Connor Cruise (29) with ex-husband Tom Cruise, credited her mother for teaching her the value of balancing personal and professional life.
Reflecting on motherhood, Kidman expressed a deep love for parenting, saying, “I would’ve loved 10 kids. But that’s OK because I get to mother other children. I have six nieces and nephews and I’m godmother to 12. I love mothering, I love kids: they’re quirky, funny, and unfiltered. And then you get to see them grow and send them on their way.”
Nicole Kidman’s latest film Babygirl, which is set to release in theatres on December 25, has already brought her significant recognition. She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at the Venice Film Festival and the National Board of Review’s NBR Award for Best Actress. These accolades further highlight her unmatched talent and enduring legacy in the entertainment industry.
