Washington [US], May 19: Oscar-winning actress Nicole Kidman has officially confirmed her return in the much-awaited sequel to the 1998 cult classic Practical Magic, alongside Sandra Bullock. Directed by Susanne Bier, the magical romantic comedy is slated for release on September 18, 2026.
Describing the upcoming film as “fun and witchy,” Kidman expressed excitement about reuniting with Bullock and collaborating with Bier, calling their creative synergy a “perfect triangle,” as quoted by The Hollywood Reporter.
Kidman, a vocal advocate for female representation in cinema, also reflected on her personal pledge to work with female directors. Originally committing to a new project with a female filmmaker every 18 months, she revealed she has already collaborated with 27.
“I was going to make it possible,” she said, adding that she seeks to “experiment and push boundaries” rather than play it safe.
“For me, at this stage of my life, to have that purpose and to have that commitment is something that pulls me through as well… I know that’s what younger filmmakers are looking for too—so they’ll come and experiment with me,” she added.
The Big Little Lies star will be honored with the prestigious Kering Women in Motion Award, recognizing her impactful contributions to uplifting women’s voices in film.
Kidman also discussed her recent film Babygirl, directed by Halina Reijn, which gained viral momentum on TikTok—highlighting how digital platforms can unexpectedly drive a film’s popularity.
Looking ahead, Kidman teased a potential new role she called “incredibly disturbing,” reflecting her continued interest in challenging, unconventional characters. She revealed part of her creative process involves late-night writing.
“I do it at 3 a.m.—writing sessions,” she said. “I wake up and I’ll write something, be it a dream or something circulating in my head and my life and my heart at that time.”
