New Delhi [India], April 25: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has strongly condemned the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives, calling it a “dastardly act” and a serious violation of human rights.
In a statement issued on Friday, the NHRC said it was “deeply disturbed” by the April 22 attack in which terrorists reportedly identified victims by faith before opening fire in Baisaran meadow, a popular tourist destination in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.
“The Commission condemns the dastardly attack on the unarmed and unsuspecting innocent civilians… The incident has shaken the conscience of every right-thinking human being,” the statement read.
⚖️ NHRC: Terrorism a Major Human Rights Threat
The Commission emphasized that terrorism remains one of the biggest causes of human rights violations globally, and urged coordinated action against those “aiding, abetting, supporting, and advancing” such attacks.
“The time has come to act against those aiding terrorism and to hold them accountable… otherwise it may result in shrinking of democratic space, reprisals, and grave violations of human rights including the right to life, liberty, equality, fraternity, and livelihood,” the NHRC stated.
🛡️ Call for Accountability & Justice
The NHRC urged the State authorities to take decisive steps to:
- Fix accountability at all levels
- Bring perpetrators to justice
- Provide compensation and support to the victims’ families
“It is expected that the State will take all necessary steps… and provide succour to the families of the victims in all possible manner,” the Commission added.
