NF Railway Installs 135 AI-Powered CCTV Cameras, Panic Buttons At Guwahati Station To Boost Passenger Safety

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NF Railway) has taken a major leap in railway safety and technology by installing 135 AI-based CCTV cameras and panic buttons at Guwahati railway station, aiming to bolster passenger security and operational efficiency.

As one of the busiest stations under NF Railway’s jurisdiction, Guwahati is now equipped with a cutting-edge surveillance system, representing a transformative step in the modernization of station security.

A key component of the initiative is the newly launched Escort Mobilisation Hall, designed as a centralized coordination hub for the Railway Protection Force (RPF). This facility enables faster deployment and more precise response by RPF personnel during emergencies.

Speaking to media, Kapinjal Kishore Sharma, Chief Public Relations Officer (CPRO) of NF Railway, said:

“In Guwahati railway station, the new system of AI-based Surveillance System of CCTV camera network has been started. A total of 135 cameras have been installed across various important locations. These cameras are equipped with face recognition technology and can detect the movement of known criminals from a pre-fed database.”

He further explained the built-in intrusion detection system:

“If anybody tries to tamper with or obstruct these cameras, the alert system is triggered automatically.”

To ensure immediate help in case of emergencies, especially for women passengers, 20 panic buttons have been strategically placed across the station.

“If anyone, especially a woman or night traveler, feels unsafe, they can press the panic button. An alert is instantly sent to the RPF control room, where round-the-clock monitoring of CCTV feeds is conducted. Necessary action is taken immediately,” Sharma added.

The system provides comprehensive monitoring coverage of the entire premises, helping detect and deter criminal activities and enhancing real-time situational awareness.

In addition to Guwahati, similar AI-enabled systems are being implemented at Haiborgaon railway station, though panic buttons and some features are yet to be added.

“These are state-of-the-art cameras. After Guwahati, we’ve installed them at Haiborgaon. In the future, these features will be extended to other major stations,” Sharma said.

Across the NF Railway zone, over 1,000 cameras are already operational at 50 key stations. Sharma noted that Guwahati was chosen for the pilot phase of this technology, which will be gradually rolled out to other important hubs.

In parallel, NF Railway is taking steps to improve safety at Level Crossing (LC) gates. High-resolution CCTV cameras have been installed at 28 LC gates across major divisions to monitor train movement and enhance emergency response.

“We are working to eliminate level crossing gates. Last year, 28 were removed through the construction of Road Over Bridges and Under Bridges. Enhancing safety at LC gates remains a top priority,” said Sharma.

These comprehensive measures reflect the NF Railway’s commitment to smart surveillance, proactive policing, and passenger-first security architecture in the Northeast.
