Karachi [Pakistan], February 15: New Zealand defeated Pakistan by five wickets in the final of the tri-nation series in Karachi, a victory that boosted their position in the ICC Men’s ODI rankings.
Chasing a target of 243, New Zealand achieved the target in just 45.2 overs, with key contributions from Daryl Mitchell (57), captain Tom Latham (56), Devon Conway (48), Kane Williamson (34), and Glenn Phillips (20*). Latham, despite a dip in form leading into the match, played a crucial role in guiding the team home.
However, it was the New Zealand bowlers who set up the victory. Will O’Rourke was the standout performer with figures of 4/43 in 9.3 overs, helping to restrict Pakistan to a modest total. Mitchell Santner and Michael Bracewell both took two wickets each, while Nathan Smith and Jacob Duffy also contributed with a wicket apiece.
This match served as a warm-up for the much-anticipated ICC Champions Trophy 2025, which begins on February 19. The two teams will meet again in the tournament opener at the same venue.
With the win, New Zealand’s unbeaten run in the series helped them rise in the ICC ODI team rankings from 100 to 105, securing the fourth spot with 4,414 points from 42 matches. Pakistan, after losing the final, dropped to third place with a rating of 107.
Meanwhile, Australia, despite a shocking 0-2 defeat to Sri Lanka, climbed back to second place with a rating of 110. India remains at the top of the rankings with 119 points, after their 3-0 series victory over England at home.
New Zealand will aim to carry their winning momentum into the Champions Trophy, where they face Pakistan in the opening match.
