Sergio Gor, the newly appointed US Ambassador to India, officially took charge and expressed his deep optimism and gratitude for the opportunity, acknowledging US President Donald Trump for the important role.
Gor took to X (formerly Twitter) to share his enthusiasm on Wednesday:
“Very much looking forward to being the new U.S. Ambassador to India. Thank you @POTUS @realDonaldTrump! I’m deeply grateful for this opportunity and committed to honoring the faith you’ve shown in me.”
President Trump Highlights Strategic Importance
During Gor’s swearing-in ceremony on Tuesday (local time), President Trump underscored the immense importance of the US-India partnership and expressed his confidence in the new Ambassador.
Trump stated that he was entrusting Gor with the mission to further strengthen strategic, economic, and security ties with New Delhi, while deepening America’s “fantastic relationship” with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
Key highlights from President Trump’s remarks included:
- Strategic Priority: Trump called the relationship with the Republic of India “one of the most important international relationships” for the US.
- Relationship with PM Modi: He noted the “fantastic relationship” shared with Prime Minister Modi, adding that the Indian Prime Minister was keen to engage with Gor.
- Indo-Pacific Partner: Trump emphasized India’s role as the world’s largest country, home to one of the oldest civilizations, and an important economic and strategic security partner in the Indo-Pacific region.
- Ambassador’s Goals: As Ambassador, Gor’s focus will be to “fortify our country’s bond, promote investments in key US industries and technologies, increase American energy exports, and expand our security cooperation.”
Gor’s Commitment to the Relationship
After officially taking the oath, Gor thanked President Trump for entrusting him with the responsibility of overseeing the pivotal relationship with India. He reaffirmed his dedication to the mission, stating:
“I look forward to enhancing the relationship between our two nations. I look forward to doing a great job for you.”
Gor was nominated for the position of India’s next Ambassador and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs in August. In September, during his testimony before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee, Gor had stressed that India is “one of the most important relationships our nation (US) has in the world.”
Ahead of his swearing-in, Gor had already visited India in October, where he met with key Indian leadership, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval.
