Washington DC [US], March 6: Just a week after its release, Netflix has announced that it is renewing Kate Hudson’s sports-comedy series Running Point for a second season. The show, which debuted on February 27, quickly gained traction, amassing 9.3 million views in its first weekend and ranking in the Top 10 across 83 countries, according to Deadline.
Mindy Kaling, actress and executive producer of the show, expressed her gratitude for the overwhelming response from viewers. “We are so thrilled to be able to deliver a Season 2 of Running Point to the fans of the show. We still cannot believe the response from audiences – thank you to everyone who has watched!” Kaling said.
In Running Point, Hudson stars as Isla Gordon, the newly appointed president of the Los Angeles Waves basketball franchise. Isla, thrust into the role after a family scandal forces her brother (played by Justin Theroux) to step down, must prove herself to her skeptical family, board members, and the sports community.
The first season features a star-studded ensemble cast, including Brenda Song, Drew Tarver, Scott MacArthur, Fabrizio Guido, Toby Sandeman, Chet Hanks, Jay Ellis, Max Greenfield, and Justin Theroux. The series is written and executive produced by Mindy Kaling, Ike Barinholtz, and David Stassen, with Stassen also serving as the showrunner. The series is produced by Kaling International in association with Warner Bros. Television.
In addition to Running Point, Kate Hudson is set to appear in the upcoming musical drama Song Sung Blue, directed by Craig Brewer for Focus Features. The film, which also stars Hugh Jackman, Michael Imperioli, and Jim Belushi, centers on two struggling artists who join a Neil Diamond tribute band in hopes of finding love and pursuing their dreams. The film is based on the 2008 documentary of the same name directed by Greg Kohs.
