In a swift response to a massive legal and social storm, Netflix India has removed all listings and promotional material for the upcoming film Ghooskhor Pandat as of Friday, February 6, 2026.
The crime thriller, directed by Neeraj Pandey and starring Manoj Bajpayee, faced intense backlash just days after its announcement during Netflix’s 2026 content slate event.
The Controversy: “Casteist” Allegations
The core issue lies in the film’s title. Critics and community leaders argued that pairing the term “Pandat” (a variation of Pandit, associated with the Brahmin community) with “Ghooskhor” (bribe-taker) creates a derogatory stereotype.
- FIR in Lucknow: On the directions of UP CM Yogi Adityanath, an FIR was filed at the Hazratganj police station against the makers for “hurting religious sentiments” and “disturbing social harmony.”
- Government Intervention: The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting reportedly intervened, leading to the removal of the teaser and promos from YouTube and social media handles.
- Protests: Members of the Brahmin community held protests in Bhopal, Prayagraj, and Lucknow, burning effigies and demanding a total ban.
Official Statements
Both the director and lead actor have clarified that the title was not intended to be a commentary on any caste.
| Person | Key Quote from Statement |
| Manoj Bajpayee | “Portraying a flawed individual and his journey of self-realisation… not meant to be a statement about any community.” |
| Neeraj Pandey | “Fictional cop drama… the term ‘Pandat’ is simply used as a colloquial nickname for the character.” |
What Happens to the Film Now?
While the promotional assets have been scrubbed to “respect public sentiment,” the future of the project remains in limbo:
- Possible Rename: Speculation is rife that the film will be retitled (e.g., to Ghooskhor Cop or Ajay Dikshit) before being put back on the schedule.
- Legal Hurdles: The makers must address the FIR in Lucknow and a petition currently pending in the Delhi High Court seeking a permanent stay on the release.
- Title Approval: The Film Makers Combine (FMC) has also sent a notice claiming the title was never officially registered with them.
