Netanyahu Accuses ‘Leftist Deep State’ Of Weaponizing Justice System

Tel Aviv [Israel], March 20: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused the “leftist Deep State” of using the justice system to undermine his government, a statement that sparked a fierce political debate within Israel.

In a post on his official X (formerly Twitter) account, Netanyahu wrote:

“In America and in Israel, when a strong right-wing leader wins an election, the leftist Deep State weaponizes the justice system to thwart the people’s will. They won’t win in either place! We stand strong together.”

However, Netanyahu deleted the tweet less than an hour later and reposted the same message from his personal account.

Background and Recent Developments

Netanyahu’s comments came after two suspects were detained and questioned in connection with an investigation into alleged corruption, specifically regarding claims that Qatari funds were funneled to some of Netanyahu’s aides. One suspect was released under unspecified conditions, while the other remains under interrogation.

This investigation has added to the mounting tensions surrounding Netanyahu’s government, which is facing scrutiny over controversial judicial reforms and political maneuvering. According to reports from The Times of Israel, Netanyahu’s decision to fire Shin Bet Chief Ronen Bar was influenced by his admiration for former US President Donald Trump, particularly his actions against the so-called “Deep State.”

Judicial Reform and Political Tensions

Netanyahu’s government has been pushing for legislation that would give political figures greater control over the judiciary, a move that has faced strong resistance from many Israelis. This has led to mass protests in Jerusalem and other cities, with critics arguing that the reforms would undermine the independence of the judiciary and erode democratic principles.

At the same time, tensions have been heightened by the resumption of airstrikes in Gaza, further fueling opposition to Netanyahu’s policies.

Reactions to Netanyahu’s Comments

  • President Isaac Herzog: Expressed strong support for Israel’s independent judiciary, writing on X:

“Israel’s strong and independent judicial system is an asset to our democracy, and the president of Israel is very proud of it.”

  • Opposition Leader Yair Lapid: Responded harshly to Netanyahu’s post, with his Yesh Atid party accusing the Prime Minister of losing control.

“He’s gone off the rails” and is “spreading dangerous conspiracies, undermining the rule of law, and slandering Israel.” The party further stated, “He is in panic mode. He knows that his inner circle is mired in foreign interests and that the truth will be revealed. This is not leadership, this is a dangerous and embarrassing panic.”

Political Fallout

Netanyahu’s remarks and the ongoing investigations have added fuel to the political fire, with critics accusing him of undermining the integrity of Israel’s institutions for personal and political gain. Meanwhile, his supporters see these actions as necessary to protect his government from perceived left-wing influence and judicial overreach.

The controversial judicial reforms, the corruption investigation, and Netanyahu’s increasingly combative rhetoric have created a deeply polarized political environment, with both sides accusing each other of undermining Israel’s democratic foundations.
