A significant diplomatic row has erupted between Israel and Australia after Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu issued a blistering critique of his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese. In a post on his official X account, Netanyahu declared that Albanese had “forsaken Australia’s Jewish community and betrayed Israel,” labeling him a “weak politician.”
This fiery remark came shortly after Israel’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs revoked the visas of Australian diplomats to the Palestinian Authority. This move was a direct retaliation for a series of recent decisions by the Australian government, which have strained diplomatic relations:
- Recognition of a Palestinian state: On August 12, Prime Minister Albanese announced that Australia was considering recognizing a Palestinian state at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. This decision aligns Australia with other nations like France, Britain, and Canada, who have also signaled their support for the two-state solution. Netanyahu has vehemently opposed such a move, arguing it would serve as a “reward” for Hamas following its October 7, 2023, attack.
- Cancellation of an Israeli lawmaker’s visa: Australia also cancelled the visa of an Israeli lawmaker, Simcha Rothman, who was scheduled to meet with Australia’s Jewish community. This community has reported a sharp increase in antisemitic attacks since the conflict in Gaza began.
Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong responded to Israel’s visa revocation, calling the move an “unjustified reaction.” She argued that Netanyahu’s government was increasing Israel’s diplomatic isolation on the world stage.
The dispute is set against the backdrop of the humanitarian crisis in the Gaza Strip. Albanese had previously stated on August 12 that Netanyahu was “in denial” about the situation. The ongoing conflict has created mounting international pressure on Israel, with countries urging a ceasefire and a resolution to the humanitarian crisis.
