Bhubaneswar (Odisha): A girl student from Nepal, pursuing her B.Tech in Computer Science at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT), was found dead in her hostel room on Thursday evening in an apparent case of suicide, police confirmed.
The student, whose identity has not yet been publicly disclosed, was found hanging inside her hostel room, located within the KIIT campus. Police responded promptly after being alerted and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
“Today, we have received information that a girl from Nepal has died by suicide at KIIT University. We reached the location and initiated an investigation. A scientific team collected all necessary evidence. Her body has been sent to AIIMS for a post-mortem,”
said Bhubaneswar-Cuttack Police Commissioner Suresh Dev Datta Singh.
Authorities stated that the Nepal Embassy and the student’s family have been informed.
State Government Reacts
The Odisha Government extended condolences to the bereaved family and assured necessary actions would be taken.
“In this hour of distress, the State Government extends its support to the family of the deceased and offers its condolences to them,”
said a statement by the Information and Public Relations Department.
Senior officials, including the Commissioner of Police and Revenue Divisional Commissioner, visited the site. A forensic team was also deployed to collect evidence as part of the ongoing investigation.
Second Tragedy in the Same Year
This tragic incident comes just months after another Nepali student at KIIT was found dead in a hostel room on February 16, sparking protests by Nepalese students. They alleged that harassment by a fellow student led to her death, and that earlier complaints had been ignored. The accused in that case was arrested the next day.
Next Steps
Authorities await the post-mortem report from AIIMS and will continue their inquiry. Officials emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation to understand the cause and address any underlying issues.
