May 08, 2025: Nepal’s political leadership has shown support for India’s recent counter-terror operation, Operation Sindoor, with several lawmakers and political figures acknowledging the necessity of decisive action against terrorism.
Janardan Sharma, Deputy Secretary General of Nepal’s opposition Maoist Center and former Foreign and Finance Minister, welcomed India’s precision strikes on terror camps inside Pakistan. Posting on Facebook, Sharma said, “India has conducted ‘Operation Sindoor’ against terrorism. Terrorism is the worst thing that can happen to human civilization. It should be the duty of every nation to fight against terrorism. At the same time, it is necessary to defeat terrorism through mutual cooperation for peace and stability.”
In Thursday’s meeting of Nepal’s House of Representatives, lawmakers echoed similar sentiments. Ramhari Khatiwada of the ruling Nepali Congress emphasized the global right of nations to defend themselves from terrorism, stating: “Any country has the right to defend itself against terrorism.” Referencing ongoing geopolitical conflicts like the Russia-Ukraine war, the Israel-Hamas war, and tensions between China and Taiwan, Khatiwada urged the government to remain alert and prepared.
He added, “India’s attack on Pakistan for harboring terrorism has further made us vulnerable. I would request the government to be ready to face any of those consequences.”
Another Congress MP, Mukta Kumari Yadav, also called on the government to take a firm and explicit stance against terrorism. “Nepal has adopted a foreign policy of non-alignment but the nation needs to clear up the stance against terrorism,” she said.
India launched Operation Sindoor in response to the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which killed 26 people, including one Nepali citizen. The Indian Armed Forces carried out high-precision strikes on nine terrorist camps located in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).
India’s Ministry of Defence emphasized that the strikes were measured and non-escalatory, avoiding Pakistani military installations. “India has demonstrated considerable restraint in selection of targets and method of execution,” the MoD stated, reinforcing that the operation was in line with India’s commitment to hold perpetrators of terror accountable.
