Neelam Kothari shuts down 90s affair rumours with Govinda, says link-ups were ‘part of the whole game’

Actors Govinda and Neelam Kothari were among Bollywood’s most popular on-screen pairs during the late 1980s and early 1990s, and their strong chemistry often fuelled rumours of a real-life romance. While Govinda has previously spoken about being fond of Neelam and even hinted that he once considered marrying her, the actor has now firmly dismissed speculation about an affair.

In a recent podcast with Usha Kakade Production, Neelam addressed the long-standing rumours, calling them completely untrue. She described Govinda as a wonderful human being but made it clear that there was never anything romantic between them. Apologising for disappointing fans of the pair, she reiterated that the reports linking them were baseless.

Reflecting on the media culture of the 1990s, Neelam said that link-up rumours were almost inevitable at the time. She explained that actors rarely clarified gossip back then, and the press often published speculation without verification. According to her, working together in multiple films automatically led to assumptions of a relationship, making such rumours “part of the whole game.”

Govinda, on the other hand, has spoken fondly of Neelam in earlier interviews, admitting that he admired her deeply during the peak of their collaborations. He once said that spending so much time together on film sets made him grow more attached to her, describing her as someone any man could fall for.

Govinda and Neelam featured together in more than a dozen films, becoming one of the most successful pairs of their era. Their popular collaborations included Love 86, Ilzaam, Khudgarz, Sindoor, and several 1989 releases such as Billoo Badshah, Taaqatwar and Gharana.
