Guwahati (Assam) [India]: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has secured a landslide victory in the Assam Panchayat Polls 2025, winning the majority of Zilla Parishad and Anchalik Panchayat seats, according to results announced on Tuesday.
In a press conference at the State BJP headquarters in Guwahati, Assam Chief Minister Dr Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that the BJP and its ally Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) had clinched 300 out of 397 Zilla Parishad seats and 1436 out of 2192 Anchalik Panchayat seats in 27 districts across the state.
“A Resounding Endorsement of PM Modi’s Governance Model”
CM Sarma hailed the outcome as a “clear pro-incumbency wave” and a major morale booster ahead of the 2026 Assam Assembly Elections.
“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Team NDA has secured a sweeping victory. The people’s mandate is a resounding endorsement of our welfare-driven governance,” Sarma said.
He thanked BJP President JP Nadda, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal, and BJP National General Secretary BL Santosh for their support during the campaign.
Vote Share and Regional Dominance
- NDA Vote Share:
- 76.22% in Zilla Parishad
- 66% in Anchalik Panchayat
- Seats Won:
- BJP: 1265 Anchalik Panchayat seats
- AGP: 171 Anchalik Panchayat seats
- Congress: 72 Zilla Parishad and 460 Anchalik Panchayat seats
Sarma emphasized that the BJP-led alliance had significantly improved its performance compared to 2018, noting a 26% rise in seats and vote share.
Minority-Dominated Areas Show Silent Support
CM Sarma acknowledged unexpected gains in minority-dominated regions, traditionally Congress strongholds:
“We have won five minority-dominated Zilla Parishad seats and secured second place in many others. The silent votes of women and girls from these areas have come in our favour,” he said.
He added that if replicated in the Assembly polls, this shift could reflect positively across 103 constituencies.
Looking Ahead: Panchayat Conference and Assembly Strategy
Sarma announced a state-level Panchayat conference in Guwahati, where Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP President JP Nadda are expected to attend.
He further stated the BJP aims to contest 105 Assembly seats with “good candidates” in 2026, asserting:
“We won’t announce Mission 90 or Mission 100. If we’ve done good work, the people will bless us.”
Poll Phases and District-Wise Highlights
The Assam Panchayat elections were held in two phases:
- Phase 1: May 2
- Phase 2: May 7
The BJP-led alliance dominated in key districts like Dibrugarh, Sivasagar, Jorhat, Majuli, Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Dhemaji, Sonitpur, and Nagaon.
