National Traders’ Welfare Board Holds 6th Meeting, Focuses On Retail Policy, ‘Vocal For Local’, And Digital Empowerment

New Delhi [India]: The 6th meeting of the National Traders’ Welfare Board (NTWB) was convened on Tuesday at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi, bringing together stakeholders from across the country to deliberate on policy initiatives aimed at empowering India’s retail trade sector.

The meeting was chaired by Sunil J. Singhi, Chairman of the NTWB, and attended by non-official members representing trade associations and various States and Union Territories, along with ex-officio members from nine key Union Ministries and Departments.

Sanjiv, Joint Secretary at the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), highlighted the pivotal role of the retail sector in India’s economic landscape. He urged the Board to provide inclusive and actionable suggestions for the formulation of the upcoming National Retail Trade Policy, stressing the importance of grassroots-level participation in shaping the policy.

Retail Sector Policy & Budget Highlights

Chairman Sunil J. Singhi reiterated the Government’s ongoing commitment to supporting traders and MSMEs, citing key provisions from the Union Budget 2025–26. These include regulatory simplification, enhanced financial assistance, and infrastructure development aimed at creating a more business-friendly environment.

A special magazine titled “Journey of the National Traders’ Welfare Board” was released during the event, chronicling the Board’s milestones and initiatives since its inception.

Emphasis on ‘Vocal for Local’ & Digital Commerce

A key agenda item was the promotion of the ‘Vocal for Local’ initiative, which encourages the purchase and promotion of indigenously manufactured goods. Singhi called on all members to champion the initiative in their respective States and Union Territories. In a symbolic gesture, all attendees took a pledge to act as ambassadors of the campaign.

Recognizing the growing importance of digital commerce, the Chairman underscored the need for digital inclusion of small traders, encouraging participation in platforms like the Open Network for Digital Commerce (ONDC). He urged members to facilitate the onboarding of local traders to enhance their market access and income potential.

Representations & Next Steps

Singhi also shared that numerous representations from trade bodies and NTWB members have been forwarded to relevant ministries for action. He invited further suggestions to enhance outreach and awareness of government welfare schemes targeting the retail sector.
