MUMBAI – The Indian animated epic Mahavatar Narsimha is a huge hit at the box office and is making history in the world of movies. The directors say that as of August 8, the movie had made more than ₹150 crore worldwide since it came out in theaters on July 25. This makes it the highest-grossing animated movie in India, a title that used to belong to both the Indian smash Hanuman (2005) and the Hollywood hit Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023).
People and critics alike have loved the mythological epic based on the story of Lord Narsimha. The fact that it did so well at the box office is especially impressive because Indian animated movies usually have a hard time doing well. Last Friday, the Hindi version of the movie made an amazing ₹4.7 crore, bringing its total Hindi net collection to ₹84.44 crore.
Kleem Productions and Hombale Films, who made the movie, said on social media that it was a success, saying, “Unleashing a divine blaze. #MahavatarNarsimha races past 150 CRORES+ worldwide gross… and continues setting screens on fire all over.” The production companies now want the movie to make ₹150 crore in India and ₹200 crore around the world.
Directed by Ashwin Kumar, Mahavatar Narsimha came out in both 3D and 2D formats and in a number of South Indian languages. Its popularity across India has been a big part of its success. Its success is seen as a turning point for the Indian animation industry, showing that more and more people want high-quality, local movies based on Indian mythology.
The movie is simply the start of a big movie world. The production companies have seven animated movies based on Lord Vishnu’s avatars slated for distribution over the next ten years. Mahavatar Parshuram (2027), Mahavatar Raghunandan (2029), and a two-part finale with Mahavatar Kalki (2035 and 2037) are all on the schedule.
