Nagaland Solar Mission Launches Rooftop Solar Scheme To Provide Free Electricity For Households

Kohima (Nagaland), March 25: The first meeting of the Nagaland Solar Mission was held on Monday, chaired by the state Chief Secretary, Dr. J Alam, at the Conference Hall of the Chief Secretary. The meeting focused on implementing the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a scheme aimed at installing rooftop solar panels in residential households across Nagaland.

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, approved by the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 29, 2024, will provide rooftop solar installations and free electricity of up to 300 units per month for one crore households across India. The initiative seeks to reduce household electricity bills by decreasing reliance on grid supply.

To ease the financial burden on households for installing rooftop solar (RTS) systems, the Government of India will offer subsidies ranging from 60% to 54% for 1KW to 3KW systems. Additionally, the Nagaland state government will supplement this subsidy by offering extra state subsidies, ranging from 36% to 31%, further reducing the cost of RTS installations.

For the financial year 2025-26, the state government has allocated Rs 10 crore for this initiative. As a result, the total subsidy for RTS installation will range from 96% for up to 2KW systems to 85% for up to 3KW systems, making rooftop solar installations more affordable for Nagaland’s residents.

A Solar Mission Team will be formed at the Directorate Level, and a Solar Mission Cell will be established at the Secretariat level to oversee the implementation of the scheme. The meeting was attended by the Finance Commissioner, Secretary of Power, Engineer-in-Chief of the Power Department, and other officials.
