Myanmar Confirms 180,000 Rohingya Verified For Repatriation, Bangladesh Awaits Further Progress

Dhaka [Bangladesh]: Myanmar has officially informed Bangladesh that it has verified 180,000 Rohingya refugees—out of a list of 800,000 provided by Bangladesh—as eligible for repatriation.

The list was originally submitted by Bangladesh in six separate batches between 2018 and 2020. An additional 70,000 names are currently under final review, pending further verification of photographs and personal details.

This development was communicated to Khalilur Rahman, High Representative of the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, by U Than Shew, Myanmar’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister. The meeting took place on the sidelines of the 6th BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok.

According to a statement from the Press Wing of the Chief Adviser of Bangladesh, this marks the first confirmed list of its kind and represents a significant step toward resolving the protracted Rohingya crisis.

The statement further noted that Myanmar’s Foreign Minister Mint affirmed Myanmar’s intention to complete the verification process for the remaining 550,000 Rohingyas on the original list “on an expeditious basis.”

During the bilateral meeting, Khalilur Rahman expressed condolences for victims of a recent earthquake in Myanmar and reiterated Bangladesh’s willingness to provide further humanitarian aid.

Earlier in March, NGO and UN agencies jointly appealed for USD 934.5 million in aid to support 1.48 million people, including Rohingya refugees in Cox’s Bazar and Bhasan Char, as well as host communities in Ukhiya and Teknaf.

“Under the leadership of the Bangladesh government, the 2025-26 Joint Response Plan (JRP) for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis was launched on 24 March 2025,” said a joint statement by the NGOs and UN agencies.

“JRP is a two-year fundraising document which articulates the shared vision of how the humanitarian community will respond to the assessed and expressed needs of Rohingya refugees and affected host community while introducing more sustainable approaches,” it added.

“As the refugee crisis enters its eighth year, the UN and its partners call on the international community to extend their support to address the prioritized needs of Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi communities that are hosting them,” the statement read.
