“My Integrity Has Been Irreparably Tarnished”: Justice Yashwant Varma Refutes Fire Incident Allegations

Delhi High Court judge Yashwant Varma seeks inquiry to clear his name after cash recovery rumours following a fire at his residence spark controversy.

New Delhi, March 23 – In the midst of a swirling controversy over the alleged recovery of cash during a recent fire at his official residence, Justice Yashwant Varma of the Delhi High Court has come forward with a strong rebuttal, calling the allegations baseless and damaging to his reputation.

“For a judge, reputation and character are of utmost importance. Sadly, mine have been gravely tarnished by unsubstantiated innuendos,” Justice Varma stated in a written communication addressed to Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya.

“We Were Never Shown Any Cash”

Justice Varma categorically denied any association with the cash reportedly discovered at the fire site.

“We were neither shown nor given any sacks of burnt currency,” he clarified, adding that the limited debris recovered was from a confined area and contained no trace of currency.

The judge further emphasized that neither he nor his family had any prior knowledge of any cash being stored in the house.

Calls for Inquiry Into His Conduct

In a firm stance to protect his judicial record, Justice Varma requested a formal inquiry into his conduct and urged members of the legal fraternity to evaluate his integrity.

“This incident has irreparably harmed my reputation, which I have painstakingly built over the years. My honesty and dedication must be judged by my conduct over more than a decade on the bench,” he added.

‘All Financial Transactions Through Legal Channels’

Justice Varma noted that all his financial dealings were conducted transparently via official banking channels, including UPI and debit/credit cards.

He also pointed to an important corroboration:

“When the site was handed back after the fire department concluded its operations, there was no evidence of any cash, a fact also acknowledged by the Chief of the Fire Service in public reports,” he said.

The fire incident, initially considered a routine emergency, turned controversial after media reports speculated about burnt currency being recovered from the site—claims that Justice Varma now strongly disputes.
