Mumbai Turns Grey with Showers As IMD Predicts Heavy Rainfall; Traffic Snarls Reported In Thane

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 23: Mumbai woke to grey skies and light showers on Thursday morning, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a forecast for a generally cloudy sky with heavy rainfall through the day. The weather development marked the beginning of an extended wet spell expected across parts of India’s west coast.

In Maharashtra’s Thane district, the Bhiwandi-Wada road was severely affected by heavy rains that lashed the region late Wednesday night. Torrential downpours damaged the road surface, resulting in large potholes and significantly slowing traffic movement. The situation was further worsened by ongoing construction, culminating in a traffic jam that stretched nearly 7 to 8 kilometers, with commuters reportedly stranded for over four hours.

The IMD has predicted continued heavy to very heavy rainfall along the west coast, including Konkan, Goa, Karnataka, and Kerala, over the next several days.

Meanwhile, Delhi experienced severe weather conditions on Wednesday, including a dust storm, thunderstorms, hail, and heavy rainfall in various parts of the capital. This chaotic weather pattern extended to several other Indian states.

From 8:30 AM IST Thursday to 5:30 AM IST Friday, the IMD recorded significant rainfall in multiple regions:

  • Gangetic West Bengal:
    • Haldia (Purba Medinipur) – 10 cm
    • Diamond Harbour (South 24 Parganas) – 9 cm
    • Dum Dum & Alipur (Kolkata & North 24 Parganas) – 4 cm each
    • Digha (North 24 Parganas) – 2 cm
  • Konkan & Goa:
    • Panjim (North Goa) – 9 cm
    • Mumbai (Santacruz) & Ratnagiri – 3 cm each
  • Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Northeast India also reported intense rainfall activity during this period.

Authorities urge commuters and residents to remain cautious, avoid unnecessary travel, and stay updated with local advisories as the monsoon intensifies across the subcontinent.
