Massive Mumbai-Pune Expressway Pile-Up: 18-20 Vehicles Collide, 5km Jam, Many Injured

Maharashtra, Pune – A huge pile-up on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway stopped all traffic near Datta Food Mall on Saturday afternoon. The event happened not long after the descent from the Lonavala-Khandala ghat segment. It caused a lot of confusion, with traffic backed up for about five kilometers and a lot of cars stuck.

According to local reports, a container truck caused the severe crash by speeding up and then losing its brakes. The truck then hit another car, which started a terrible chain reaction that involved perhaps 18 to 20 cars.

The tragedy happened on one of India’s busiest expressways, which usually carries between 1.5 and 2 lakh vehicles a day, with even more on weekends. Unfortunately, today’s event happened on a Saturday, which is when traffic is at its worst.

Severe Effects and Immediate Emergency Response

The crash with many cars had a very bad effect. Pune Pulse said that at least three cars were completely crushed and became unrecognizable, and many others were badly damaged. Many of the people in the pile-up were said to have been badly hurt, which led to a quick and large-scale rescue reaction.

Emergency crews were quickly sent to the location to help the injured and start the difficult job of cleaning the wreckage. Police and municipal officials got there quickly and have been working nonstop to control the chaos, directing traffic, and trying to bring back order.

Authorities are rushing to stop traffic and change routes.

After the crash, traffic on the freeway came to a total stop, and there was a lengthy line of cars that were stuck for around five kilometers. Authorities had to reroute cars to different roads to ease the heavy traffic and let emergency operations continue. They told people to find other means to get to their destinations.

The event has once again brought to light the urgent need for better safety enforcement and ongoing monitoring, especially in the high-risk ghat areas of the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. These stretches are known for having a lot of accidents because the terrain is hard and there are a lot of fast-moving cars. The size of this pile-up is a sad reminder of what may happen when safety rules aren’t strictly followed on important transportation routes.
