MUMBAI – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has raised its warning for Mumbai to a red alert, saying that the area will get a lot of rain. The red alert is still in effect for Mumbai city, the suburbs of Mumbai, Thane, and Raigad, according to the latest “nowcast.” It is predicted to stay till 11:15 AM on Monday. The warning says that there is a good chance of “intense to very intense spells of rain and thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds that can reach 30 to 40 km/h.”
Mumbai is on red alert, but other districts of Maharashtra are also getting weather alerts. The IMD has put Pune, Ahmednagar, Beed, Palghar, and Latur on an orange warning for heavy rain. The rest of the state is still on a yellow alert for light rain.
The monsoon’s stronger activity is already having an effect on life in Maharashtra. Heavy rain fell on the city of Pune on Sunday night, causing waterlogging problems that made people on social media cry for schools and companies to be closed.
On Monday morning, commuters in Mumbai had a lot of trouble. A technical problem stopped a monorail in the Wadala neighborhood, and officials said it was because of a “supply issue.” People had to get on a train that was coming from the other way. Rajesh Ananda Bhojane, a local Ward Councillor, told the news agency media, “I ask the government to fix this problem that keeps coming up.” His comment was about a similar event last month when two monorails broke down during a red alert, leaving around 800 passengers stuck for two to three hours while they were rescued.
The IMD has predicted “very heavy rainfalls” for Konkan & Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, & Marathawada on Monday. On Tuesday, the same areas are expected to see “light to moderate rain/thunderstorms.”
