A severe heatwave has gripped parts of western India, with temperatures in the **Mumbai Metropolitan Region rising sharply. On Monday, temperatures in Mumbai, Thane, and Palghar climbed close to 40°C, significantly higher than typical early March levels.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued heatwave warnings for the region and expects hot conditions to persist until Wednesday, March 11. According to meteorologists, hazy skies combined with limited cloud cover have intensified the daytime heat.
IMD Issues Yellow Alert For Heatwave Conditions
In its latest forecast, the IMD maintained a yellow alert for heatwave to severe heatwave conditions in isolated areas of the North Konkan region and the wider Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
The weather department also warned that nights are becoming increasingly warm, particularly in coastal areas, which is worsening discomfort for residents.
“Hot and humid conditions in isolated pockets are very likely over the Mumbai Metropolitan Region,” the IMD said in a weather bulletin released on Monday.
Record Temperatures And Rising Humidity
Meteorological observations show that several areas recorded temperatures around 40°C under clear and bright sunshine, making it one of the hottest early-March periods in recent years.
The heat index, which factors in humidity along with temperature, is making conditions feel even hotter. Residents across the metropolitan region have reported intense heat, fatigue and uncomfortable midday conditions.
A senior official from the IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre said the early arrival of the heatwave is unusual.
“As temperatures climb and humidity rises, we are asking citizens to take all necessary precautions. This heatwave is significant because it has arrived early in the season and could persist through mid-week,” the official said.
Citizens Advised To Limit Outdoor Exposure
Public health authorities and civic officials in Mumbai and surrounding districts have urged residents to take precautions to avoid heat-related illnesses.
People have been advised to:
- Avoid outdoor activities between 12 PM and 4 PM
- Stay well hydrated throughout the day
- Check on vulnerable groups such as children, elderly people and those with health conditions
Residents say the unusual heat has already begun affecting daily life.
“Early mornings are warmer than usual, and by 11 AM it already feels like peak summer. Turning on the AC throughout the day has become a necessity,” said Thane resident and daily commuter Abhay Shankar.
Heatwave Alerts Extend To Other Maharashtra Districts
The heatwave conditions are not limited to the Mumbai metropolitan region. The IMD has also issued alerts for several other districts across Maharashtra, including:
- Raigad
- Nashik
- Jalgaon
- Amravati
These areas are also expected to experience unusually high temperatures and hot, humid conditions in the coming days.
In some districts of Vidarbha, temperatures have already crossed the 40°C mark, reflecting a broader warming trend across western India.
Authorities Prepare Heat Relief Measures
Municipal authorities in Mumbai have begun preparing heat-relief measures to help residents cope with the extreme weather.
Steps being taken include:
- Setting up additional drinking water points in crowded public locations
- Ensuring adequate water supply in high-traffic areas
- Advising schools and workplaces to consider schedule adjustments during peak afternoon heat
A civic official emphasised that residents must also take personal precautions and follow official advisories during the heatwave period.
Possible Relief Later In The Week
Weather experts say the intense heat may begin to ease slightly by Thursday, depending on changing wind patterns and possible cloud development.
However, until then, the India Meteorological Department has warned residents to prepare for several more days of sweltering temperatures and humid conditions across the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
