MUMBAI, India – Residents of Mumbai woke up to a continuous downpour on Friday morning, July 25, 2025, as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an orange alert for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Thane, signaling a likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Palghar has been placed under a yellow alert, indicating moderate weather activity.
The weather department has also issued a more severe red alert for Raigad and Ratnagiri, forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall in some areas and extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places throughout Friday. The red alert has also been maintained for the ghat regions of Satara and Pune. A red alert implies a “take action” warning, while orange and yellow alerts suggest “be prepared to take action” and “be aware” warnings, respectively.
Key areas within Mumbai, including CSMT, Byculla, Kurla, and Mulund, were among the worst affected, experiencing heavy showers followed by constant rain since early morning hours. Officials have strongly advised people to remain indoors unless absolutely necessary and to monitor real-time updates on traffic and rail services.
Mumbai’s temperature on Friday is expected to reach a maximum of 30°C and a minimum of around 23°C, offering some respite from humidity but no break from the rain. Coastal breezes are predicted to blow at 20 to 30 kmph, with potential for stronger gusts and sharp showers.
Adding to the city’s concerns, a tidal surge of almost 4.5 meters is expected late this afternoon, specifically at 12:40 PM, with a height of 4.66 meters. This coincides with a four-day-high tide warning issued by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), urging people to stay away from the shores, as waves are expected to swell dangerously until July 27. The combination of relentless rain and high tides significantly increases the chances of deep waterlogging in low-lying areas.
Rain Forecast for Delhi and Jharkhand
Meanwhile, the IMD has also predicted thunderstorms accompanied by rain in Delhi on Friday.
For Jharkhand, heavy rainfall is predicted on both Friday and Saturday. The IMD has issued an ‘orange’ alert for three districts on Friday, indicating hefty rainfall, and a ‘yellow’ alert for 17 districts, forecasting heavy rain. This increased rainfall activity in Jharkhand is attributed to a low-pressure area over the North Bay of Bengal, which is expected to intensify and move inland.
