Mumbai Boat Accident: 105 Admitted, 90 Discharged; 2 In Critical Condition

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], December 19 : The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) reported on Thursday that a total of 105 people were admitted to five hospitals following the boat accident in Mumbai. Of those, 90 have either been discharged or are in stable condition, while two remain in critical condition. Tragically, 13 people lost their lives in the incident.

“Search and rescue operations are still ongoing by various agencies, including the Indian Navy,” the BMC added.

The accident occurred when an Indian Navy boat lost control while undergoing engine trials in Mumbai Harbour due to a malfunction. The boat collided with a passenger ferry, which capsized as a result. Four out of the six individuals aboard the Navy boat died, with one critically injured. The ferry, which carried around 110 passengers, including 20 children, was severely impacted.

In response to the tragedy, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex-gratia of Rs 2 lakh from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund (PMNRF) for the families of each deceased. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also assured that the government would provide all necessary assistance to the affected, announcing an ex-gratia of Rs 5 lakh from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the families of those who died.

Maharashtra Minister Uday Samant confirmed that an inquiry would be conducted, and appropriate action would follow. “An inquiry will be carried out, and if there was a technical error, it’s understandable. However, if the boat was being driven recklessly for enjoyment, action will be taken against those responsible,” Samant told.

Shiv Sena MLC Manisha Kayande expressed her sorrow over the incident, calling it “very saddening.” She emphasized that the government would take care of the families of the deceased and the injured. “This should not be politicized. Several rules and regulations are in place, and if human error played a role, it should be addressed,” Kayande said.
