A video of Parag Shah, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA from Ghatkopar East, physically assaulting an autorickshaw driver on Saturday, December 20, 2025, has sparked massive outrage across Maharashtra.
The incident occurred on the busy Mahatma Gandhi Road in Ghatkopar East while Shah was conducting a field inspection and participating in a protest against illegal encroachments and traffic congestion in the area.
The Altercation: Wrong-Way Driving Sparks Fury
According to eyewitnesses and viral footage, the confrontation began when an autorickshaw was seen driving in the wrong direction, allegedly violating traffic safety norms.
The Slap: Enraged by the violation, Shah stopped the vehicle and, following a brief verbal argument, was seen slapping the driver across the face.
The Justification: Shah later asserted a “zero-tolerance policy” for encroachment and traffic violations, though he has faced severe backlash for bypassing legal channels and physically assaulting a citizen.
Official Post: Earlier that day, Shah had posted on Instagram about his “Strong movement against hawking in Ghatkopar East,” sharing his commitment to clearing footpaths in Vallabhbaug Lane and Khau Galli.
Political Backlash: “Law of the Land vs. Law of the MLA”
The Opposition was quick to capitalize on the footage, accusing the BJP of “bullying” the working class.
| Leader | Statement |
| Varsha Gaikwad (Congress) | “BJP MLAs have become so arrogant that they don’t even spare poor auto-drivers… They take the law into their own hands because they think they are above it.” |
| Maharashtra Congress | “Who gave these MLAs the right to take the law into their own hands? Actions against traffic rules are for the police and RTO, not legislators.” |
Who is Parag Shah?
Parag Shah is not just a local politician but one of the most prominent real estate developers in the state.
The Richest Candidate: In the 2024 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Shah declared assets worth a staggering ₹3,383.06 crore, maintaining his title as the wealthiest candidate in the state.
Political Career: He has represented Ghatkopar East since 2019 and previously served as a BMC corporator from Ward 132.
Controversy History: In 2019, his own car was vandalized by supporters of former BJP minister Prakash Mehta after Mehta was denied a ticket in favor of Shah.
