The question—“Will this be MS Dhoni’s last IPL season?”—has once again taken centre stage as the Indian Premier League 2026 approaches.
At 44, Dhoni is set to feature in his 19th IPL season for Chennai Super Kings, nearly seven years after his last international appearance for India. While fans speculate about his future, former India captain Sourav Ganguly has chosen to remain tight-lipped.
“I will tell Dhoni what to do and not to the media,” Ganguly said at a recent event, hinting at a private conversation rather than a public statement.
Aakash Chopra Predicts Possible Farewell
Former cricketer Aakash Chopra believes IPL 2026 could mark the end of Dhoni’s legendary career.
According to Chopra, Dhoni’s role in the team will be crucial in determining his future—especially if he is used only as an Impact Player.
“You don’t run the team from the dugout… MS Dhoni’s biggest asset is reading the game better than anyone else,” Chopra said.
He added that Dhoni’s presence on the field is vital to his influence, suggesting that a reduced role could signal the right time to retire.
Sanju Samson Tipped as Successor
Chopra also hinted at a potential successor behind the stumps, naming Sanju Samson as a long-term replacement.
“He has the heir apparent now. Sanju Samson will eventually don the gloves,” Chopra noted, adding that the transition could even begin during the upcoming season.
However, he emphasised that Dhoni’s fitness—particularly concerns around his knee—will play a decisive role in determining how long he continues.
Dhoni’s Legacy Still Intact
Despite ongoing retirement chatter, Dhoni remains one of the most influential figures in IPL history. His leadership, tactical brilliance, and ability to read match situations have been key to CSK’s sustained success over the years.
As IPL 2026 kicks off on March 28, all eyes will once again be on the legendary captain—whether it’s another chapter in his storied career or the final curtain call.
