The monsoon season may bring cool breezes and lush greenery, but it also raises the risk of water-borne diseases like diarrhoea and cholera. Contaminated water and food become common culprits during this time, making preventive care essential.
Dr Jayanti Khura shares five simple but crucial tips to help you stay safe and healthy this rainy season:
1. Maintain Proper Hand Hygiene
Before eating or cooking, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Clean hands can prevent most infections, including those that cause diarrhoea.
2. Drink Only Clean, Safe Water
Water contamination peaks in monsoon. If possible, install an RO filter or purifier at home. Alternatively, boil drinking water and store it in a clean, covered container to avoid water-borne diseases.
3. Wash Fruits and Vegetables Thoroughly
Before consuming or cooking, always wash fruits and vegetables with clean water. Avoid eating cut fruits left exposed, as flies can contaminate them and spread germs.
4. Eat Fresh and Reheated Food
Consume only freshly cooked food. If leftovers are stored in the refrigerator, reheat them properly before eating. Always keep food covered to avoid contamination.
5. Avoid Street Food During Monsoon
Monsoon is not the time to indulge in roadside snacks. Outside vendors may not follow proper hygiene practices. Stick to home-cooked meals to reduce the risk of falling ill.
By following these monsoon health tips, you can significantly lower your chances of getting sick and enjoy the season safely.
