Monsoon Fury In Himachal Pradesh: 78 Dead, Massive Damage Reported

July 06, 2025: At least 78 people have lost their lives in Himachal Pradesh since the onset of the monsoon on June 20, according to the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA). Of these, 50 deaths were caused by rain-related incidents such as landslides, flash floods, and cloudbursts, while 28 fatalities resulted from road accidents.

The SDMA detailed that rain-induced tragedies include 14 deaths from flash floods, eight from drowning, eight due to electrocution and accidental falls, with additional fatalities from landslides, lightning, and snake bites. Mandi district reported the highest rain-related toll at 17, followed by Kangra with 11 deaths. Other affected districts include Kullu, Chamba, and Shimla.

Road accidents claimed 28 lives across multiple districts, with Chamba recording the highest at six deaths.

The monsoon has wreaked havoc on infrastructure and livelihoods, with 269 roads blocked, 285 power transformers affected, and 278 water supply schemes disrupted. The estimated damage to public and private property exceeds Rs 57 crore. Crop losses, damaged homes, and disrupted health and education services have compounded the crisis.

Authorities have deployed NDRF and SDRF teams in the worst-hit areas. Search and rescue operations are ongoing, particularly in Mandi and Kullu, where several people remain missing. The SDMA continues to monitor the situation and has urged residents to remain vigilant as heavy rains persist.
