New Delhi, India — In a momentous announcement from the Union Information & Broadcasting Ministry, veteran Malayalam actor Mohanlal will be conferred with the prestigious Dadasaheb Phalke Award for 2023. The country’s highest honor for cinematic excellence will be presented to the 65-year-old actor on September 23 at the 71st National Film Awards ceremony.
The ministry’s official announcement on X (formerly Twitter) praised the actor’s profound impact on Indian cinema, stating that the award is a recommendation from the Dadasaheb Phalke Award selection committee. The post lauded Mohanlal’s “iconic contribution,” highlighting his “unmatched talent, versatility, and relentless hard work” that have set a “golden standard in Indian film history.”
A Career Spanning Over 400 Films
With a prolific career that has seen him star in more than 400 films, Mohanlal is widely regarded as a cinematic institution. While he is the undisputed face of Malayalam cinema, his acting prowess has transcended regional boundaries, leaving a significant mark in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, and Hindi films as well. His diverse and celebrated filmography includes classics like Thanmathra, Iruvar, Kilukkam, Vanaprastham, and the modern-day blockbuster Drishyam.
In addition to his latest honor, Mohanlal has received numerous accolades throughout his career, including the National Film Award for Best Actor for his role in Bharatham (1991). He was also bestowed with the Padma Shri in 2001 and the Padma Bhushan in 2019, two of India’s highest civilian honors.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also took to X to congratulate the veteran actor, celebrating his “excellence and versatility.” Modi’s post highlighted Mohanlal’s work not just in cinema but also in theater, and his deep connection to Kerala’s culture. “His cinematic and theatrical brilliance across mediums is truly inspiring. Congratulations to him on being conferred the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. May his accomplishments continue to inspire generations to come,” the Prime Minister wrote.
The Dadasaheb Phalke Award, which was first instituted in 1969, is an annual recognition given for an individual’s lifetime contribution to the growth and development of the Indian film industry. Last year, the honor was presented to veteran actor Mithun Chakraborty.
