The Supreme Court has directed Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami and the Government of West Bengal to respond to a plea filed by his estranged wife, Hasin Jahan, seeking a revision of the monthly maintenance amount she is currently receiving.
The hearing comes months after the Calcutta High Court ordered Shami to pay a substantial monthly sum to his wife and daughter.
SC Remarks on Current Maintenance Amount
While hearing the plea filed by Hasin Jahan, the Supreme Court bench made an oral observation regarding the current payment structure. According to news agency ANI, the bench remarked that, on an interim basis, the maintenance ordered by the Calcutta High Court is “quite handsome.”
The legal tussle is centered on the monthly sum awarded to Hasin Jahan. She had initially demanded a total of ₹10 lakh per month in maintenance (₹7 lakh for herself and ₹3 lakh for their daughter), but this request was not entertained by the courts.
Calcutta High Court Order: A Significant Increase
The Supreme Court’s involvement follows a ruling by the Calcutta High Court on July 1, which had ordered a significant increase in the monthly maintenance Shami was to pay.
- Total Monthly Maintenance: ₹4 lakh
- Split: ₹1.5 lakh for Hasin Jahan and ₹2.5 lakh for their daughter.
The order, passed by Justice Ajoy Kumar Mukherjee, stated: “In my considered opinion, a sum of ₹1,50,000/- per month to the petitioner no.1(wife) and ₹2,50,000/- to her daughter would be just fair and reasonable to ensure financial stability for both the petitioners…”
This July order was a victory for Hasin Jahan, as the amount was a substantial jump from the ₹1.30 lakh per month that a district court had previously ordered Shami to pay in 2023.

Mohammed Shami and Hasin Jahan got married in 2014. However, they separated four years later in 2018 after Hasin Jahan filed an FIR against the cricketer, alleging domestic violence and abuse. This action initiated the long and public legal battle between the couple.
