Iran-Israel Conflict: PM Modi Urges De-Escalation In Call With Iranian President Amid U.S. Strikes

New Delhi/Tehran: Amid rising tensions following the United States’ military strikes on Iran’s underground nuclear facilities, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday held a crucial conversation with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, calling for “immediate de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy.”

In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi wrote:

“Spoke with President of Iran @drpezeshkian. We discussed in detail about the current situation. Expressed deep concern at the recent escalations. Reiterated our call for immediate de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy as the way forward and for early restoration of regional peace, security and stability.”

The phone call comes hours after the U.S. conducted a major airstrike operation, targeting three key Iranian nuclear sites — Fordo, Isfahan, and Natanz — using stealth bombers and 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs. The strike marks a dramatic escalation in the Iran-Israel conflict, with Washington directly intervening to weaken Iran’s nuclear infrastructure.

🛑 Iran Reacts Strongly, Warns of Consequences

The Iranian government swiftly condemned the U.S. action. Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of triggering a broader crisis and violating international norms.

“The warmongering, a lawless administration in Washington, is solely and fully responsible for the dangerous consequences and far-reaching implications of its act of aggression,” said Araghchi.

He added that while Iran has always believed in keeping the “door to diplomacy” open,

“This is not the case right now.”

“There is no red line the U.S. has not crossed,” Araghchi said, calling the airstrikes on nuclear sites a “very big red line” and “the most dangerous” escalation yet.

🔍 Background: Tensions Over Nuclear Deal

The U.S. strikes follow Israel’s earlier military action and come at a time when talks were reportedly ongoing between Tehran and Washington over a possible renewed nuclear deal, aimed at limiting Iran’s uranium enrichment and preventing the development of nuclear weapons.

Iran maintains its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. However, the targeting of Fordo and Natanz — both heavily fortified and central to Iran’s enrichment activities — marks a strategic shift in the conflict’s trajectory.

🇮🇳 India’s Call for Peace

India, with historical ties to both Iran and the West, has repeatedly urged peaceful resolution of global conflicts. PM Modi’s outreach underscores New Delhi’s diplomatic balancing act, especially in volatile regions like the Middle East, which directly impact its energy security and diaspora interests.

As regional tensions rise, global powers and international organizations are calling for restraint and diplomatic engagement to avoid further escalation.
