Ministry Of Home Affairs Set To Relocate To New Central Vista Complex In Historic Move

New Delhi [India], July 22: In a landmark shift, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) is set to relocate from its historic North Block office to a newly constructed, state-of-the-art complex in New Delhi. The transition, part of the ongoing Central Vista redevelopment project, is expected to be completed by the end of this week or early next week.

This will be the first time in history that the MHA office moves from the iconic North Block — a colonial-era structure built in the early 20th century that, along with the South Block, has been the nerve center of India’s central administration for nearly a century.

“The pace of relocation is steady and the transition is expected to be completed soon,” a senior MHA official told ANI, requesting anonymity.

The first step in the move occurred last Friday with the relocation of Union Home Secretary Govind Mohan’s office. The new office complex, located roughly 2 kilometers from North Block, is part of a broader initiative to modernize India’s governance infrastructure.

As of now, about 25% of MHA’s offices have been shifted, with more expected to follow in the coming days.

The new facility is equipped with advanced security systems, digital connectivity, and environmentally certified infrastructure. It is designed to house several key departments under the MHA, including Internal Security, Border Management, Disaster Management, and Jammu and Kashmir Affairs.

The relocation is being hailed as a significant step in the government’s vision to enhance inter-ministerial coordination and administrative efficiency through the Central Vista project. This ambitious initiative includes the construction of a new Parliament building, Central Secretariat complexes, and the redevelopment of Rajpath — now known as Kartavya Path.

The MHA’s shift symbolizes a broader transformation in how governance is structured to meet the needs of a modern, digital, and rapidly growing India.
