Washington DC (US), March 16: Actress Millie Bobby Brown recently addressed the criticism she faced regarding her fluctuating accents, switching between British and American styles of speaking. Appearing on the SmartLess podcast, the Stranger Things star discussed the backlash she received for her changing accent, referring to it as “accent-gate.”
Brown expressed her frustration, saying, “That was such a huge thing for a minute. I actually call it the ‘accent-gate’ because it’s so frustrating. For a second, everyone was talking about my accent, and they had a real problem with it. And I was like, ‘Guys, I’m married to an American.'” (Brown married Jake Bongiovi in May 2024.)
She went on to explain that being surrounded by American accents in her personal life, especially from her husband’s family, has influenced her speech. “When I’m around his family, I immediately go into, like, an American accent. But then I was just in England, and then the second I hear my mom and dad’s accent, I just go right back,” she said.
Brown also attributed her accent changes to her profession as an actress, emphasizing that her ability to adapt is a crucial part of her craft. “You want me to play these characters, but you expect me not to morph into people. What I hear is what I do. It’s all part of it,” she explained.
This wasn’t the first time Brown addressed the subject. In a previous interview with internet personality Max Balegde, she echoed similar sentiments, stating, “I’m an actor. I grew up in the public eye. I grew up in America. I come to set, and I’m an actor and I adapt, and so I want to mimic other people!”
Millie Bobby Brown, who is currently working on Stranger Things season 5, remains focused on her career and her dynamic performances in various roles.
