Washington [US], May 22: Singer and actor Miley Cyrus has opened up about a serious health scare she experienced while hosting Miley’s New Year’s Eve Party on NBC in 2023 alongside country music legend Dolly Parton.
In a candid conversation on The Zane Lowe Interview Series on Apple Music 1, Miley revealed that she suffered an ovarian cyst rupture during the live broadcast, an intense and painful condition where a fluid-filled sac on or inside the ovary breaks open.
“I had a pretty traumatic experience on a show that I was doing with Lorne when I was doing my New Year’s show,” she shared. “I had a medical emergency. I had an ovarian cyst rupture.”
Despite the pain and uncertainty, Miley pushed through the live performance, which included duets with Dolly Parton, Sia, and Paris Hilton. “It was pretty traumatic because it was extremely excruciating and I did the show anyway,” she said. “But it was really, really hard on me.”
The incident left the Grammy winner questioning her future in music. At one point, she even considered stepping away from her singing career. However, a heartfelt dinner conversation with Saturday Night Live creator Lorne Michaels gave her new perspective.
“He goes, ‘Six months—everybody has six months to feel sorry for themselves and then we start to rebuild,'” Miley recalled. “You have no idea how many artists have sat in this chair and told me they were quitting music… Everyone does this.”
Feeling that she had reached the end of her emotional recovery period, Miley chose to move forward, channelling her experience into her creative process. She soon began working on her upcoming album, Something Beautiful, which is slated for release on May 30.
“What I’ve always realized is that it will quit me before I ever quit it,” Miley said of her music career. “That’s not in the cards for me.”
