Los Angeles [US] : Oscar-winning actress Michelle Yeoh is set to headline an innovative action film titled ‘The Surgeon’, a project that aims to kick off a brand-new franchise and will debut for buyers at the Cannes Film Market, as reported by Variety.
The film marks the directorial debut of Rohsan Sethi, a real-life physician and screenwriter, and is being produced by Patrick Wachsberger’s 193 in partnership with Basil Iwanyk, known for the John Wick series. Wachsberger, who previously ran Lionsgate Motion Picture Group, helped distribute the John Wick films while Iwanyk produced them.
In ‘The Surgeon’, Yeoh plays a retired surgeon who is abducted and forced to perform an emergency operation on a mysterious patient. But her captors have underestimated her—armed with 35 years of surgical experience, she fights back with precision and lethal skill. The film promises an “explosive and brutal confrontation” as Yeoh’s character turns the operating room into a battlefield in a visual style described as like nothing seen before.
Director Sethi expressed his excitement over the project, saying:
“I’m so excited to bring something brand new and innovative to the action genre based heavily on my medical background. I cannot think of a better partner than Michelle, the iconic queen of action who will be using her skills in a different and surprising way in this film.”
Michelle Yeoh, fresh off her Oscar-winning performance in Everything Everywhere All At Once, continues to cement her reputation as a dynamic action star with emotional range. For her role in that film, she also received a Golden Globe, Screen Actors Guild Award, and Film Independent Spirit Award in 2023.
‘The Surgeon’ is being positioned as a unique blend of medical drama and stylised action, and is expected to intrigue international buyers with its fresh take on the genre and Yeoh’s global star power.
