Mexico Train Derailment: 13 Dead, Nearly 100 Injured As Interoceanic Train Overturns In Oaxaca

Mexico City: At least 13 people lost their lives and nearly 100 others were injured after an Interoceanic Train derailed in Mexico’s southern state of Oaxaca, authorities confirmed on Sunday. The tragic incident occurred near the town of Nizanda, where the passenger train was travelling with 250 people onboard, including nine crew members and 241 passengers.

According to the Mexican Navy, 193 passengers are out of danger, while 98 suffered injuries, of which 36 are receiving medical care. President Claudia Sheinbaum expressed deep concern and revealed that five passengers are in critical condition. She confirmed that senior government officials have been dispatched to assist the injured and support the families of the victims.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office has begun a formal investigation into the derailment. Attorney General Ernestina Godoy Ramos shared on social media that authorities are working to uncover the cause of the incident and ensure accountability.

The derailed train is part of the Interoceanic Train service, inaugurated in 2023 during the tenure of former President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador. The train operates under the Interoceanic Corridor Project, a key national initiative aimed at modernizing rail infrastructure across the Isthmus of Tehuantepec, connecting the Pacific port of Salina Cruz to Coatzacoalcos on the Gulf Coast.

The ambitious project is a cornerstone of Mexico’s strategic plan to develop the region into a world-class trade corridor capable of competing with the Panama Canal. Beyond freight expansion, the Interoceanic Train is also envisioned to boost passenger rail connectivity, stimulate regional industry, and drive economic growth across southern Mexico.

Authorities continue rescue, investigation, and rehabilitation efforts while the nation mourns yet another devastating rail tragedy.
