Mexican Mayoral Candidate Shot Dead In Veracruz During Campaign March, 3 Others Killed

A tragic wave of political violence has once again rocked Mexico, as mayoral candidate Yesenia Lara Gutierrez and three others were shot dead during a campaign march in Texistepec, Veracruz, on Sunday night, according to a CNN report. The shocking incident was captured during a Facebook Live stream, showing Gutierrez greeting supporters moments before gunfire erupted off camera, sending people fleeing in panic.

In the livestream, around 20 gunshots can be heard as people chanted in support of the Morena party candidate. The attack occurred as Mexico braces for its June 1 general elections, with escalating violence posing a grave threat to the democratic process.

Government Response:

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum confirmed the attack during a press briefing on Monday, expressing condolences and affirming federal support in the investigation.

“We’re coordinating, particularly with the Secretary of Security, and with all the support needed during this electoral period from Veracruz and Durango,” she said.

Veracruz Governor Rocio Nahle condemned the attack in a post on X, writing:

“No position or office is worth a person’s life. We will find those responsible for this cowardly murder… I have instructed [the state attorney general] and security not to stop until they find them.”

According to the state attorney general’s office, three other people were killed, and three more were injured in the ambush. Authorities have launched an extensive manhunt and pledged justice for the victims.

Mounting Violence Ahead of Elections:

Political assassinations and attacks have become increasingly common in Mexico’s election cycles. In 2024 alone, Data Cívica, a human rights organization, reported 661 politically motivated attacks, many targeting local officeholders or candidates.

Key incidents from recent years include:

  • A mayoral candidate shot dead in Guerrero in May 2023 during a campaign stop.
  • The Cotija mayor in Michoacán was killed returning from the gym.
  • Chilpancingo’s mayor was assassinated less than a week after assuming office in October.

This latest tragedy highlights the ongoing crisis of political-criminal violence that threatens candidates, officials, and democratic institutions across Mexico. With just weeks until the election, security remains a paramount concern.
