Men’s Hockey Asia Cup: India vs. China – A Crucial Start for the Hosts

The spotlight is on Rajgir, Bihar, as India hosts the Men’s Hockey Asia Cup for the first time since 2007. The tournament offers the winning team a direct entry into the FIH World Cup, a prize that the Indian team, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, is desperate to win. However, they enter the competition with some serious questions hanging over their performance this year.

A Shaky Season and High Hopes

The Indian team has had a tough 2025. After showing great promise with a strong finish at last year’s Olympics, their momentum stalled, culminating in a seven-match losing streak towards the end of the Pro League season. Despite this recent dip in form, India remains the heavy favorite to win the Asia Cup on home soil. They are the strongest team in Asia, and their dominant head-to-head record against China—18 wins in their last 24 matches—bodes well for their opening game.

Addressing the Concerns

Captain Harmanpreet Singh spoke ahead of the tournament, acknowledging the challenges while maintaining a focused mindset. He emphasized that the team isn’t taking anyone lightly, approaching the Asia Cup with the same seriousness as a major event like the Olympics.

A key concern for the team has been a “leaky defence.” While their offense is strong and capable of controlling possession, costly turnovers have been a major issue. To address this, Harmanpreet noted the importance of working with performance psychologist Paddy Upton. He shared that their training sessions have focused on staying alert in crucial moments, like the few minutes after scoring a goal or at the start of new quarters, to prevent giving away easy goals.

The Squad

Coach Craig Fulton has selected a squad that blends experience with new talent, with Harmanpreet Singh leading a strong group of players.

  • Goalkeepers: Krishan B Pathak, Suraj Karkera
  • Defenders: Sumit, Jarmanpreet Singh, Sanjay, Harmanpreet Singh, Amit Rohidas, Jugraj Singh
  • Midfielders: Rajinder Singh, Raj Kumar Pal, Hardik Singh, Manpreet Singh, Vivek Sagar Prasad
  • Forwards: Mandeep Singh, Shilanand Lakra, Abhishek, Sukhjeet Singh, Dilpreet Singh

The team’s first test will be a critical one as they face off against China in a Pool A match, hoping to turn their fortunes around and start their campaign on a high note.
