Mehbooba Mufti Voices Concern Over Ramban Landslide Crisis, Calls For Relief And Action Against Illegal Mining

Srinagar (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], April 21: Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) chief Mehbooba Mufti has raised alarm over the ongoing crisis in Jammu and Kashmir’s Ramban district following a massive landslide that has left roads blocked and residents stranded.

Addressing a press conference on Monday, Mufti urged authorities to take swift action to rescue stranded individuals and provide aid to those impacted by the natural calamity. “A huge disaster took place in Ramban, roads are blocked, and people are stuck. Many lives have been lost. I request the government to rescue or help those who are stranded,” she said.

Mufti also spoke about the damage caused by strong winds across Jammu and Kashmir, which have severely affected agricultural produce. “Basmati crops in Jammu and apple and almond trees in Kashmir are at risk. The government must compensate affected farmers,” she demanded.

Highlighting the ongoing protests by daily wage workers, Mufti reiterated her long-standing call for their regularisation. “During our tenure, we introduced an SRO and passed a bill for their regularisation. It was cleared by the LG but couldn’t be presented in the assembly. These workers deserve to be regularised,” she asserted.

Mufti didn’t hold back when addressing illegal mining in the region, alleging that a “mafia” is operating with political backing. “Mining contracts were auctioned but the contractors haven’t received clearances. Instead, hafta (extortion money) is being collected. Some relatives of political leaders are involved and are blackmailing contractors,” she alleged, urging the Chief Minister to launch a probe.

“I request the CM to seriously look into this issue, as it is affecting the functioning and image of his own government,” she added.

Meanwhile, Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah provided an update on the situation in Ramban. “The condition is very bad in certain areas, especially around the National Highway. The Deputy CM and local MLAs are on site. Restoration work is ongoing,” he said.

Abdullah confirmed that the Centre has been approached, and assistance from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is being deployed. He assured compensation from the PM Relief Fund and other sources to aid those who have suffered losses.

The Ramban district has been severely impacted by landslides and flash floods triggered by heavy rainfall on Sunday. In Bagahana village, three people — including two children — died when their homes collapsed due to the slide.
