MEA Urges Merit-Based Visa Evaluation For Indians Amid New US Social Media Guidelines

New Delhi: The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) has taken note of the new US Embassy guidelines requiring visa applicants to submit details of their social media identifiers, and has called for merit-based evaluation of Indian nationals’ visa applications.

Addressing the weekly media briefing, MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated:

“Visa and immigration matters pertain to the sovereign functions of any country. But we have seen the guidelines issued by the US Embassy, which require visa applicants to provide details of their social media identifiers. We believe that all visa applications of Indian nationals should be evaluated based on merit.”

Jaiswal further assured that India remains in active discussion with the US to safeguard the rights and interests of Indian citizens.

“We remain engaged with the US side on all mobility and consular issues to ensure that the legitimate interests of Indian nationals are protected.”

No Change in US Travel Advisory for India

On the recent US travel advisory update for India (issued June 16), Jaiswal clarified that the advisory level remains unchanged at Level 2, indicating that the US does not currently perceive any heightened risk in travel to India.

“We have been informed by US authorities that there has been no change in India’s advisory level, which continues to remain at Level 2. This level has been in place for several years.”

India Reacts to Pakistan Army Chief’s US Visit

When asked about Pakistan Army Chief General Asim Munir’s visit to the White House, Jaiswal said:

“India has noted the visit. I have no further comment to make.”

General Munir’s visit, including a reported meeting with former US President Donald Trump, has raised diplomatic curiosity, though India maintained a reserved stance.

India-US Relations: “A Partnership for the 21st Century”

Despite concerns over visa procedures and regional geopolitics, the MEA reaffirmed India’s commitment to its strategic partnership with the US.

“Our partnership with the United States is wide-ranging, grounded in shared democratic values, and strengthened by a growing strategic convergence.”

Jaiswal highlighted that the India-US relationship is among the most consequential partnerships of the 21st century, with sustained collaboration across sectors including defence, critical technologies, energy, and trade.
