In a significant move to professionalize domestic cricket and bolster its talent pipeline, the Mumbai Cricket Association (MCA) announced a series of landmark initiatives following its apex council meeting on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
The key decisions focus on financial security for players and creating a more structured pathway from the grassroots level to professional T20 leagues.
1. Central Contracts for Senior Players
The MCA will now introduce central contracts for its senior team players. This move is designed to:
- Provide Stability: Empower players with financial security, allowing them to focus entirely on their performance.
- Foster Confidence: Ensure that the “pillars” of Mumbai cricket are well-supported by their parent body, a step similar to the system used by the BCCI for national players.
2. Scouting Tournament for T20 League
To ensure a steady flow of fresh talent into Mumbai’s eight-team T20 league, the association is launching a dedicated scouting tournament.
- Merit-Based Pathway: It aims to discover young, under-the-radar talent and provide them a clear route to elite competitive levels.
- Future-Proofing: President Ajinkya Naik emphasized that this will help identify talent specifically suited for the evolving, fast-paced nature of modern T20 cricket.
3. The Dilip Vengsarkar Inter-College Tournament
Reflecting its commitment to collegiate cricket, the MCA approved a new inter-college tournament named after the legendary former India captain, Dilip Vengsarkar.
- Nurturing Youth: The tournament serves as the foundational level of the new “robust pathway” envisioned by the council.
- Legacy of Excellence: Naik stated that naming the event after Vengsarkar aims to inspire young cricketers to aspire to the leadership and excellence the “Lord of Lord’s” represented.
President’s Vision
Ajinkya Naik, who was re-elected unopposed as MCA President in late 2025, described the decisions as “forward-looking.”
“Our vision is to create a robust pathway from college cricket to the highest levels of the game… These initiatives are designed to enhance player development, ensure long-term well-being, and create clear pathways for emerging talent.”
